Plantain is great for small cuts, abrasions, stings and rashes. I’ve read that a fantastic poultice mosquito bites is to chew a plantain leaf, spit it out and apply under a bandage. I like sticking with the “no saliva method- this salve is 3 ingredients, plantain leaves I dried from our yard, and organic olive oil, and beeswax.
Plantain is sometimes called the “band aid” plant because – thanks to the presence of iridoids – it has a very soothing, anti-inflammatory effect on skin. It also contains aglycone and aucubigenin – which have documented antibacterial activity – and allantoin, which supports skin healing.
Plantain is considered helpful for:
Bee/wasp stings
Mosquito bites and other bug bites
Poison ivy/poison oak/sumac (here are some other home remedies that can ease discomfort)
Eczema
Psoriasis
Sunburn
I didn’t come up with the research. Please thank mommypotamous.com for that! My recipe however is my own, though there are many readily accessible out there.
